Lors de l’édition de 1967, étape Marseille-Carpentras (211 km), le Britannique Tom Simpson meurt, le 13 juillet, alors qu’il faisait l’ascension du mont Ventoux par une chaleur étouffante (35 °C). Déjà en 1955, le coureur français Jean Malléjac y avait subi une grave insolation. Eddy Merckx lui-même eut un malaise lors de sa victoire au sommet9. L’étape a été gagnée au sprint par Jan Janssen après que Julio Jiménez fut passé en tête au Ventoux.
