    CATEDRALE St JEAN BAPTISTE PERPIGNAN

    La première pierre de l'église St Jean Baptiste fut posée en 1324 par le roi Sanche de Majorque et l'évêque Béranger d' ELNE (deux inscriptions encastrées dans les contreforts de la 3ème travée de la nef commémorent cet évènement). Avec la chute du royaume de Majorque, la peste et les guerres, les travaux vont s'arrêter jusqu'au début du XVème siècle. La construction va reprendre en 1416; Guillem Sagrera en sera le maître d'oeuvre. A cette époque on abandonne le plan initialement prévu à trois nefs pour un plan plus simple avec une nef et des chapelles latérales. Il faut attendre le 16 mai 1509 pour voir la consécration de st Jean le Neuf. En 1601, la collégiale est promue au rang de Cathédrale, remplaçant ainsi l'ancienne Cathédrale romane d'ELNE. La particularité de Perpignan réside dans la conservation de sa première église (St Jean le Vieux, construite au XII et XIIèmes siècles, consacrée en 1246, qui était le siège de la paroisse primitive de la ville crée en 1025) de style roman aux côtés de la nouvelle église construite dans un style gothique très sobre. La nef unique compte 7 travées voûtées sur croisées d'ogives de 80 mètres de longueur, 18 mètres de largeur, et s'élève à 26 mètres de haut. Son chevet comporte 3 absides qui renferment des retables exceptionnels : Le retable de St Pierre au nord (vers 1500), le retable de la Vierge Magrana au sud (1480-1490) et le retable en marbre du maître-autel dédié à St Jean Baptiste, sculpté par Claude Perret au début du XVIIème siècle. Un passage aménagé conduit à la fameuse chapelle romane de Notre Dame Dels Correchs. Elle renferme une Vierge à l'Enfant de 1300. Les peintures murales des chapelles latérales ont été réalisées entre 1847 et 18§è, dans un style néo-gothique. Le grand orgue classé monument historique date du XVème siècle. Il possède 58 jeux répartis sur 4 claviers et pédaliers, soit un total de 5075 tuyaux. La Cathédrale est dotée d'un carillon de 46 cloches.
